Medallion 24- Bharhut Series
Medallion Style: Plant
In this medallion, a central lotus anchors the composition. From it emerge four crested wavy rhizomes, each sprouting utpalas, buds, and leaves. What is striking here is the natural variation—no two flowers, buds, or leaves are alike in shape or position.
This intentional irregularity creates a sense of living harmony, just as in nature where every bloom has its own form, yet all come together in balance. Looking at this design, one feels the impression of a lotus pond, with blossoms and foliage arranged around still waters.
The medallion beautifully reflects the Bharhut artists’ sensitivity to nature, capturing not just the form but the organic rhythm of growth and diversity.
