Medallion Style: Animal
The central lotus of this medallion rests on a plain moulding, surrounded by a border of serpent heads. The curve of each cobra hood and the rhythmic lines beneath their necks create a sense of dynamic yet soothing motion. In ancient India, serpent worship—or Nāga cult—was deeply tied to water and fertility. Cobras were believed to bring rains, their seasonal appearances linked to the monsoon. In Buddhist literature too, Nagas play a prominent role, often connected to protection and rain. This medallion beautifully merges the lotus as a symbol of purity with serpents as guardians of life-giving water.
