Medallion 19- Bharhut Series

Medallion Style: Geometric

The svastika and sauvastika are among the most ancient and widespread symbols of humanity. Found across cultures and civilizations, their meanings have ranged from solar and cosmic cycles to prosperity and well-being. In the Indian context, they remain enduring emblems of auspiciousness and good fortune.
This medallion is a fascinating study in geometric harmony. A network of interconnected svastikas and sauvastikas fills the field, with the interspaces delicately adorned with beaded lines or ratnamālās. At first glance, the pattern seems like simple rows and columns—but the longer one looks, the more movement emerges.
The right-turned svastika radiates a sense of clockwise rhythm, while the left-turned sauvastika introduces a counterclockwise flow. Together, they create a visual dance of opposing yet complementary energies. This subtle interplay transforms the medallion into more than just decoration—it becomes a meditation on balance, continuity, and the cyclical nature of existence.
