Medallion 17- Bharhut Series

Medallion Style: Plant

This medallion introduces a striking floral motif that rises from the half-lotus at its base. While often interpreted as the familiar “honeysuckle” motif, I view it instead as a stylized palmette—a sacred emblem associated with the date-palm tree, revered in the Babylonian and Assyrian traditions of Mesopotamia.

The serrated, ribbed forms along each side branch recall palm leaves unfurling along their central spine. Tentacle-like extensions on either side may represent the sprouting of twigs and spikes as the palm prepares to bloom. Slender rosettes blossom between the branches, adding rhythm to the design, while bud-like forms (one now damaged) seem to suggest clusters of date fruits.

To me, this medallion reflects how motifs and meanings travelled across cultures—absorbed, reimagined, and harmonised within the language of Bharhut art. It is a reminder of India’s long history of exchange, where sacred plants and symbols crossed geographies and were reborn through new lenses.
